Yaoundé

Yaoundé, often nicknamed Ongola in Béti, the language of the indigenous ethnic group, is an emblematic city of Cameroon. It is known as the "city of seven hills/mountains" because of its unique topography. As the political capital of the country, Yaoundé plays a central role in the governance and administration of Cameroon.

With a population of approximately 4.1 million inhabitants in 2019, Yaoundé is the second most populous city in Cameroon after Douala. It is also one of the most important cities in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC).

As the capital of the Center Province and the Mfoundi Department, Yaoundé is the seat of many key government and administrative institutions of Cameroon. This includes institutions such as the presidential palace, the seat of government, Parliament, as well as various government ministries and agencies.

In addition to its political importance, Yaoundé is also a major cultural, educational and economic center. The city is home to several universities, academic institutions and research centers, as well as a vibrant arts and cultural scene.
